Artist Statement
I am constantly revisiting my past, and at the same time looking for something else to try. I hate being labeled. My work varies from extremely fine tapestry (as many as 3,500 knots per sq. inch) to woven paintings &/or sculptures, or paintings that are both tedious and obsessive. I overheard a person at an opening I had several months ago commenting to his friend that if he hadn't seen the cards beneath my work that he'd have thought 4 different artists had done the work.
On Weaving
There was a time when I believed that if I closed my eyes I could tell which color was in my hand (of course, I also once believed that the government was actually designed to serve the people, too…). There are a great many shades of blue in my reds, and for every subtle nuance there is an accompanying electrical charge. Dark things hide in my light, and whispers are sometimes little more than disguised screams.
On Sculpture
I like to mangle metal with my bare hands. I will paint large blocks of canvas (on both sides for color and texture), and cut it up so that I can weave it into 4 gauge metal fencing, or onto stretchers of various sizes.
On Painting
Painting is sometimes more about therapy (for me) than it is about an image. Art is not a choice for me-it isn't just something I do. Without it I don't think I could breathe.
